10 Spanish Football Players Arrested Over Alleged Match-Fixing

The police, along with Europol and Interpol representatives, detained the suspects on June 21. According to available information, the players organized football matches with a predetermined result to profit from sports betting. In addition, law enforcement noted that Gibraltar National League players also manipulated matches for the same purposes.

The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling in Spain suggests that this criminal group started making suspicious bets in the spring of 2021. The regulator discovered that one of the first fixed matches took place in Tercera Division, and this was the reason for launching a detailed investigation.

Insider sources close to the police operation claimed there were several Atlético Sanluqueno athletes among the players arrested. The team’s management reacted to these allegations and said that if these facts are confirmed, they will take all necessary disciplinary measures to punish the manipulative players.
